In simple terms CBT is basically a means to think differently and more positive by recording emotions, thoughts, and behaviours on a daily basis for a period of time and understanding negative triggers and belief systems and gradually changing them. It empowers the client to take full control but involves serious analysis on the clients part. Cognitive behaviour therapy can be done alone without the intervention of a therapist, there are many good books on the subject such as 'Cognitive Behavioural Therapy For Dummies', etc.
